Psychotherapy and addiction treatment

Psychotherapy is defined as the means used to investigate and treat psychiatric disorders as well as organic disorders that have psychological impact. 

It also helps to instruct and rehabilitate the patient to get back to his/her normal life. It can be conducted individually or as group therapy.

Addiction is a disorder and health problem that has a financial burden on the patient, family and community. It affects cognition, memory, attention and judgment. It also affects the emotions and reactions of the addicted person. 

The treatment of addiction is complicated; it includes different steps and needs multidisciplinary team.

Detoxification is the starting point of the treatment and it lasts one to two weeks according to the type of the drug and the severity of the case. 

The second step is the psychosocial rehabilitation, which includes motivation enhancement therapy, relapse prevention and promoting the patient’s social skills and thinking. Rehabilitation has a major role in the success of the treatment plan for addiction.
